Dear Friends and Family,
Have you ever heard of Team in Training? Until recently I hadn’t either. Now this group of
sincere, generous, and loving over-achievers has me convinced that I can complete a Triathlon.
Me, Steven Braun, CCP (Certified Couch Potato).
OK, let me start from the beginning. Team in Training (TNT), part of the Leukemia & Lymphoma
Society, is the largest endurance sports training program in the world, and through its efforts over
the past 20 years has raised more than $800 million to support blood cancer research and
patient services. Each year TNT and its corporate sponsors hold endurance events around the
country, like the Honolulu Triathlon, for which I am currently training.
At this point you must be asking yourself if I am writing you for a donation. The answer is yes, but
not yet. First I have to tell you how I got involved with TNT.
You see, a few years ago I got the notion that I could fulfill a life long dream of becoming a
firefighter. I made my first attempt a little over two years ago by winning admission into a local fire
district’s academy. Unfortunately, I was unable to complete the academy, mostly because I wasn’t
in good enough physical condition, which resulted in a fractured hip. Since then I have been
frustrated by an inability to motivate myself to get into the required physical condition necessary
to make a second attempt.
Then, several months ago, my wife, Phyllis, gave me a brochure for Team in Training. Hmm,
intriguing; if these people could train me to complete a triathlon, while I raised money to help fight
cancer, then I just might be in condition, and more importantly have the confidence necessary to
attempt another fire academy.
Now, before you take out your credit card, I want to tell you about Arthur. Arthur was my sister’s
husband; he was more than my brother-in-law, I consider him my brother. Among other things,
he was a musician with a beautiful voice, who decided late in life that music was his calling. He
pursued it with passion and found a place in a popular local band with whom he traveled as far as
Wales and Amsterdam. With his family and his music, Arthur had found happiness. For me, what
made Arthur so special was his interested, encouraging spirit. He inspired me to believe that the
things I wanted to do were possible. Arthur died of cancer in April 2006. Now, when I am training
and start to get tired and think I can’t do this, it is Arthur’s Brooklyn-accented voice I hear telling
me I can. It is in his memory and honor that I will complete my first triathlon.
OK, here it is. I have set a goal to raise $7000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and I need
your help. While part of your donation will help me get to the Honolulu Triathlon, 75% of it will go
to a great cause: curing leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improving the
quality of life of patients and their families. And maybe this will help me become a firefighter,
enabling me to help other people as well.
Here’s how you can donate:
Go to my personal TNT website http://www.active.com/donate/tntdms/tntdmsSBraun,
or print a form by clicking here and return it by March 15, 2008. If you can’t send your donation
by that date, that’s OK, send it when you can.
Also, please pass this letter along to other people you know who might be interested in donating,
and maybe joining Team in Training. We need all the Teammates we can get. Together we can
make a difference for everyone affected by these and other cancer-related diseases.
With Love,
Steven Braun
